It’s a full moon this week, so it seems fitting that Moon Duo gives us their new record, Shadow of the Sun. I’ve personally been feeling caught up in the effect of this particular full moon, partly because it actually lands on my birthday this week and partly because it’s you know, a full moon and these things can be quite powerful in an energy mussing way.
Fifty percent wound up/fifty percent chilled out, is how I’d peg myself at the moment. There’s dichotomy in the air. You know, like it’s supposed to be winter here in the PNW but it might as well be summer…. So, “Animal” hits the energy tide sweet spot for me, fits that 50/50 general mood of mine, and is a nice little helper for someone who is trying to focus faster. You can call this psychedelia, drone rock (now with added tempo) or just straight up rock’n’roll. Regardless of what we label it, it’s a bit like napping on a speed boat.
I love this track and the whole record.
This time around, the side project of Wooden Shjips‘ Erik “Ripley” Johnson and Sanae Yamada, add a human drummer (John Jeffrey) to the mix and move away from the beatbox sounds of their previous studio releases. It’s a solid move and one that makes Shadow of the Sun get an extra layer of warmth and dynamism that makes everything even more intriguing.
Plus, who doesn’t love a video that shows a skater like Richie Jackson skate anything but an actual skateboard. Very James Bond.
