I’m writing this post at 30,000 feet on my way to NYC and so for this week’s Tunesday selection I thought I might as well and pick a band from the New York area to kick off what’s looking to be a fun/work trip for my wife and I. Brooklyn based indie rockers Celestial Shore just so happen to conveniently release their sophomore release, Enter Ghost today and that made the choice super easy for me. Twice as easy really since, the album as a whole and especially this week’s song, “Creation Myth,” is easily on my top releases of 2014.
Much more accessible than their debut, but definitely still wearing the noise pop mantle, with complex arrangements (or as Pitchfork eloquently puts it, “why settle for three chords when 17 will do?”) replete with alt-surf throwbacks, the trio opens up and faces outward more with this release. “Creation Myth” is one of the more straight ahead fast rockers on the album and also features one of the year’s coolest videos IMHO. Intentional or not, the almost chant worthy lyrics are a nice reminder that we all evolve… you do, I do, on a personal and spiritual level (at least I hope and strive to!) and Celestial Shore certainly continue to progress and evolve in a great direction as a band.
What would have made this an even better post, is if they happened to be playing while we are in the area but alas we are trading coasts for a couple of weeks. If you happen to be on the west coast though, be sure to catch them on their tour.
